Sandra,

My care wasn’t denying anyone else care. The system does that.

Someone who drinks and drives and harms themselves (but not to the point of life and death) might need a lot of medical care, physical therapy, etc. Someone who chooses to bring a child into the world uses a lot of medical care that could save other people’s lives. Professional sports use a lot of medical care. But strangely I never hear people suggesting that drunk drivers who got into accidents shouldn’t have access to reconstructive procedures, that someone who has a child is taking resources away from people who might need them, or that professional sports should be banned because of the strain it places on the medical system.

But medical care isn’t a pie. And indeed trans medical care is heavily rationed in ways other “not life and death” medical procedures (we can argue about whether trans medical care is life saving or not another time) are not heavily rationed. A good example here is erectile dysfunction treatment or 95% of plastic surgery.

Likewise, transgender care — because of how it’s paid for — often subsidizes other kinds of medicine, at least in the USA (where I’m at). The hospital where I had my surgery did not have any other surgeries that day. That meant their operating room went unused most of the day. My surgery and others like it (all the “not life and death” surgeries) help keep hospitals in business, so that when someone does need an emergency heart operation, there is an emergency room to take them to, rather than yet another urban hospital that has been turned into condos — see: https://www.inquirer.com/business/health/inq/hahnemann-university-hospital-closing-philadelphia-building-history-20190907.html

I suggest donating to Doctors Without Borders. I do. Their website has a donate link at the top of it — https://msf.org. You do donate to a charity like Doctors Without Borders which provides medical care for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access it, right? Or is your concern more on the level of “I don’t think trans people should have medical care, and I’m going to pretend to care about those who lack health care.”
